Doubt – a poem

He turns to someone sitting next to him, an older man who’s smoking and looking at a patch of sky…  …without acknowledging…  …and reads:

doubt

‘Well, you know’, she wrote, from where she’s at, a happy note
but I haven’t seen her in days and I’m not sure how she feels.
I have doubt…
not in her, not in me…
But I have doubt,
instead of
her.
